THE TOWN WHERE A MINE FIRE STILL BURNS: Centralia, Pennsylvania

The Before and After

This was once a thriving town in Pennsylvania called Centralia. Now as you look at the after picture above you can see it has fell into a sorry state.

Centralia had a mine fire back in1962, but it never went out. No one knows how the fire started, but there was speculation of trash that was being burned caught on an exposed vein of coal.

Over time the the highways started to fill with smoke, underwater gas tanks became heated and there were even stories of person swallowing sink holes.

Heat cracked roads

Lots of the residents moved on because of the safety aspect, but there are still a few people who insisted on staying on. In fact there were 1,000 residents counted in 1981 and a mere 9 who still remained in 2007.

Imagine that your one of 9 living in a town that's dammed? They stay on still knowing that the fire is still burning down below very slowly, and could probably rise at any moment. How scary is that?

Smoke that rises from underground

There was a government relocation programme in place to re-house residents until 2005. But the people who remained refused to be bought out.

Most of the buildings have been been demolished either by humans or nature, after they were condemned by the government.

To note: I have listed this as a tourist attraction, but it's not an official one for the obvious reasons that you have read. Although there are residents the place is dangerous. So if you do go it is at your own risk.

BUDGET FRIENDLY STORAGE UNITS: Ideal when moving home

There are alot of reasons for wanted to store or move some of your home items.

A couple could be your looking to generate some space to make your home look less cluttered if your selling?

Or maybe you just need it for the most popular reason - moving home or business?

The trouble with removal trucks is they are not that flexible and can only arrive at at certain time.

There is a moving company called Smart Box that cover your storage Minneapolis needs and many others areas throughout the USA.

The benefits are that your items can be taken and held in a temperature controlled storage center, until you are ready to receive them. Then they are delivered to your destination.

Your items can be stored at storage st. paul or any other of the secure facilities across the country for as long as you want to keep them there.

This is alot more convenient as you only end up paying for the storage containers you need. Plus this makes the price alot more 'budget friendly'

You can have a look at the site to get yourself a quick free quotation and find out more.

PORTABLE SHOWER TOILET TENT

This shelter can be used for many uses whilst camping. You can use it as an outdoor shower unit, a changing room, a toilet enclosure or maybe just as a place to sit out of the sun for a while.

If your worried about water building up as your showering, there is actually a self draining floor which lets the water run off.

There is plenty of air that can be gotten from the mesh ceiling, plus you have a hook to hang your shower on too if you intend to use it for that purpose.

This particular shower enclosure pictured is called the Stinky Pete Shower Toilet Tent, although i'm sure you can get other models also.

THAILAND MEDICAL TOURISM: The Advantages

Many people cant afford the price of surgery they need due to the mass expense that comes with it.

But that can all of a sudden become affordable if you intend to try out the medical tourism option instead. If your not quite sure what this is I'll explain.

Basically according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand you pay about a 1/5 here of what you would expect to pay in the USA. So many people decide to go abroad to have their surgery done instead.

With the recovery time for non-invasive procedures generally averaging at 2 weeks, people are having what they need done and then taking a relaxing holiday at the same time too.

Thailand is not only a fantastic place to visit for the beach, tourist attractions, adventure activities, festivals, diving and so on. But the treatments and medical students are still world class even though they are cheaper.

Plus eating some of that gorgeous Thai food would soon get you feeling well again i'm sure!

Research showed that Thailand in particular catered for the highest number of international tourists compared to any other country in Asia.

So not only is it a great place to holiday, but knowing that you would be in professional medical hands is a relief.

I know sometimes you can hear these horror stories of surgeries being done in foreign countries that go wrong, and naturally people will be cautious.

But to see that the practices are professional and lots of research has been done into it gives Thailand a positive edge as a place to consider your surgery.

It's definitely a new holiday trend that's already seen an estimated 1.5 million Americans visit for medical treatments.

The type of procedures you can get are usually dental, cosmetic surgery and angioplasty.

TRAVEL SHOWER: Ideal for camping

When you go camping you may not be so keen on sharing the public site showers with everyone else, or maybe the site your on hasn't got any showers?

This 12V Royal outdoor travel shower for jerry cans and water containers would be a good thing to have.

It comes with a water hose, shower head, power cord and a 12v cigarette lighter type socket plug.

All you have to do is put the pump into the water and it will be ready to go.

As well as the obvious use of cleaning yourself, you can also use it for cleaning your crockery/cutlery, clothing etc.

You may be thinking i wont be washing myself out in the open, but you can always get one of those portable changing screens or canopy shelter changing rooms if you think you wont be able to find a secluded spot!

ALL INCLUSIVE HOLIDAYS

I have always found all inclusive holidays to be the most budget friendly, and find they take alot of pressure off your holiday in general.

By that i mean with All Inclusive Packages you prepay for everything that you would do when you arrive anyway such as meals, drinks and entertainment.

This saves you the hassle of sorting everything out once your there. Plus you never know when the resort prices will fall up and down. Especially in today's economy.

These holiday's are really popular with UK holiday makers who are tending to favour destinations such as Egypt and Turkey for their 2010 holidays at the moment.

You can find out more and do a holiday search via allinclusive-holiday.co.uk

THE CITY THAT SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN BUILT: Kowloon Walled City, Hong Kong

Kowloon Walled City was never meant to have existed, but it was still built even though it didn't meat building codes. You could say it was a bit of a loop hole in the system and a legal oversight.

The original intention was for it to be a military fort, and it remained that way for hundreds of years. But then during the 1980's it became a large ungoverned densely populated city and a hot spot for illegal activities.

To name a few there were unlicensed clinics, secret factories, gambling dens, seedy parlours and more you can probably imagine. Even so it still managed to have a population of about 50,000 people.

The way in that the development was built some areas were cut off completely from natural light and air. The rooms were lit with illuminated fluorescent lights and lamps.

Some of the floors of the buildings became unusable for years due to the rubbish that was collected there.

Residents built additional buildings to the complex, drilled wells and tapped into a nearby cities water resources.

As crime rates grew and grew in the end the government finally put a stop to it and evacuated everyone from the city.

The city was demolished in 1993, but some remains and artifacts were left behind, and have been restored. Tourists can now see these at what is known now as Kowloon Walled City Park.

The walled city as of today

HOLIDAYS AT WHOLESALE PRICES

I used to go into travel agents all the time to book my holidays. But eventually i felt like my budget needs were not being met. It was like i was paying extra for their commissions or something.

Nowadays i like to book online, but there are alot of holiday companies out there it can be hard to find decent ones at competitive prices.

If i could pay wholesale prices as opposed to the normal retail ones, then that would make my holiday even cheaper. Especially in the winter time when you don't get so much sun as you would do in the peak summer times.

I saw there was a wholesale travel site called Sundance Vacations that offer discount travel deals at wholesaler prices. Meaning your not paying anyones commissions, referral fees etc.

Sundance cater for all types of holidays such as golfing, skiing, beach vacations, mountain resorts, and provide accommodations that are most requested by their customers.

Have a look at the website to find out more information about the holidays, the company and see video tours of the resorts.

You can also sign up for the newsletters to get great offers and follow Sundance on Facebook and Twitter for regular updates.

TOWER OF LONDON, CENTRAL LONDON, ENGLAND

What is the Tower Of London?

As beautiful as it looks on the outside, who would think that such a place could have a history of imprisonment & executions?

The Tower of London was built by William the Conqueror in 1078 and completed around 1097.

It is also known as Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, and is the oldest building used by the British government.

The massive complex as a whole includes several buildings, 2 concentric rings, defence walls and a moat (see ariel view below)

Ariel View

What was it used for?

The purpose of the tower was a fortress for the palace, as well as a prison for high status and royal prisoners.

It has also been known as a place for execution, torture, armoury, a treasury, a zoo, a public records office, an observatory and the Royal Mint.

The treasury in particular has been the home to the Crown Jewels of the UK since 1303, ever since they were stolen from West Minster Abbey.

The prison has held many prisoners over the years. The very first one being Ranulf Flambard in 1100 for his crime of extortion. He later escaped from the Tower by climbing down a rope, which had been smuggled into his cell in a wine casket.

One of the many winding staircases

There were also several torture chambers as well as live hanging executions for the lower class and high profile prisoners, which were held outside the complex for public viewing.

What about today?

From the many deaths that took place, the hauntings go on to this day. It is said to be the most notoriously haunted building in England.

The Tower Of London as of today is looked after by an independent charity, and has thousands of tourists visit each year. Even if it's just so they can try and do a bit of ghost spotting!

WORLDWIDE VACATION RENTAL SEARCH

When you go away sometimes we like to still feel like we are at home. This can be hard to achieve in hotels that all meet the same sort of standards.

You might want to look into a vacation home rental. These are usually owned by holiday makers themselves, that use them as a holiday home when they come over to stay.

There is a site called VacationRental.org that have England vacation rentals, homes to rent in Mexico, USA, Africa and other places from all over the world.

You can do a quick search on the site by typing in your destination for Caribean vacation rentals or wherever else your looking for easily. Then this will bring up a list of suitable accommodation.

TRAVEL TOOTHBRUSH & PASTE SET

This is a great little toothbrush set if you like to keep your items compact and easily accessible when travelling.

These mini sets from Ickle Bockles are ideal. Not only is the toothbrush compact and foldable, you get a 3g Colgate toothpaste with it too.

This makes it a perfect accessory for putting in your handbag or casual bag, and saves you rummaging around separately for your full size toothbrush and paste.

TRAVEL CLOTHES LINE

When your on holiday sometimes you still need to rinse items out, and dry them depending on how much luggage you take.

If your in a hot country your probably not going to find a radiator to dry things on in your accommodation, and who would want it on in the hot weather anyway?

This useful travel clothes line from Design Go is really useful. No fittings or attachments are required. Youjust use the suction ends on a suitable surface.

It extends from approx 1.3m to approx 2.5m. You don't need any pegs either. The way it works is simply by securing the line at both ends, then separate the strands to insert your item.

The clothes line can also be very handy if your camping or stopping in a caravan where there is lack of space.

ONE OF THE MOST HAUNTED: The Myrtles Plantation

This stately home in St. Francisville, Louisiana, USA was built in 1796, and is said to be haunted by many different ghosts.

Researchers have said that there were ten murders committed here, although only one has been officially confirmed. Even so it is said to be included in the lists for one of the most haunted places in the world.

Restored Interior

Now it has been turned into a bed and breakfast, but guests still report strange happens that have gone on during the night.

Guests have been allowed to ghost hunt inside and outside the premises without an escort, or take a guided tour.

Here are some of the ghosts that have been reported over the years:

* A former slave called Cleo, that was apparently hung there for killing 2 children.

* The 2 children that were killed have been seen playing on the veranda.

* An attorney called William Drew Winter who lived there between 1860 and 1871 was shot dead on the porch by a stranger. The story goes that he struggled into the house bleeding and tried to climb the stairs, but he died before he got there. It is said you can still hear his last dying footsteps on the staircase.

The famous staircase

Looking at it through a mirror where murder victim ghosts appear

* Ghosts of slaves turn up every now and then and ask if they can do any chores.

* The grand piano plays by itself, repeating the same cord over and over again.

WORLD'S SMALLEST COUNTRY: Vatican City

Country Overview

At just 0.2 square miles and a population of 770, Vatican City is officially the smallest country in the world.

It is that small that none of the streets have names, there is no capital and none of the residents are permanent.

Vatican City is surrounded by Rome and Italy, and is also known as the Holy See, and is the spiritual centre of the Roman Catholic community of the world.

Map of the country

It's amazing how small this country is, as some cities and towns are as big as this if not bigger.

I can imagine that the residents have to travel out the country regularly to do their shopping and do social events etc.

I'm not sure if i could live here personally. Could you?
