A British Airways passenger has been paid out £2,161 in compensation and £750 in damages, after he made an official complaint that a staff member asked him to move seats so that he wasn't sitting next to an unaccompanied child. However the staff member was just honouring BA's procedures that a male cannot sit next to any unaccompanied minors.
Mirko Fischer had actually swapped seats with his pregnant wife so she could sit by the window. Nevertheless it amazes me why the rule points towards a man when alot of abuse cases are towards women also. If that is not discrimination I don't know what is!
If that is the case with their rules then a child should not sit next to anybody or maybe have a rule that a parent or guardian have to fly with their child. Currently most airlines will fly a child between 5 and 11 can travel alone without an adult.
Mr Fischer (pictured here with his daughter) said the rule 'broke the Sex Discrimination Act' and later said he felt he had been treated as a potential child molester.
He has given his compensation money to child charities Kidscape and Orphans in the Wild.
BA have now adjusted their rule to: unaccompanied minors are managed in a safe but non discriminatory manner.
Do you think this rule was uncalled for in the first place or do you think it was justified?
